In cricket, 'batting average' is a number with which the performance of a cricketer with bat can be tracked. Batting Average indicates how good a particular batsman has performed over years in sport of Cricket with his bat.
People who keep a track of of various statistics of cricket have no doubt in understanding the term 'Batting Average'. However, sometimes people are little bit confused while understanding this term. So, let us look at the definition and formula of Batting Average in cricket.
Batting Average = It denotes the average no. of runs a batsman has hit in each innings which he has played.
Formula for Batting Average = Total no. of runs รท No. of times dismissed (given out)
In Test Cricket this number is very important. It shows how capable a batsman is once he is on the crease. Good batsmen in Test Cricket have their average between 40-50. Exceptional batsmen have their batting average as 50+. Examples of those batsmen of this generation who currently have their batting average above 50 are Sachin Tendulkar, Jacque Kallis, Kumar Sangakkara, etc. From past generation, examples of batsmen having batting average of 50+ are Sir Donald Bradman (popularly knows as 'Don Bradman'), Herbert Sutcliffe, George Headley, Graeme Pollock, etc.
This point of Cricket is very much famous that no other batsman has his batting average close to 100 except Sir Donald Bradman. His batting average was 99.94!! This average has been unmatched since the past many decades of Cricket. Graeme Pollock occupies the second spot in the list of highest career batting average ever. His average was 60.97!

Also, not even a single player has his average which is close to Bradman's average. That's why Bradman has been called by many cricket critics as the "Greatest Test Batsman" of all the time.
In today's generation, a batting average of 50+ makes a batsman backbone of hi team. Example includes Sachin Tendulkar who continues to be India's biggest batting strength. Also are Sangakkara and Kallis.
